On a trip to Dalmatia, Schindler in 1887 undertook with his entire family and his pupil Carl Moll, he discovered the picturesque cemetery Gravosa at Ragusa / Dubrovnik as a motif. Schindler created on the spot several studies and oil sketches (see for example, Inv. No. 5568). He used them as templates for monumental composition "Pax" upon his return. Schindler enters this late work territory. With the exception of unfinished series late Romantic Pictures to Joseph Christian von Zedlitz 'poem "The Forest Miss" Schindler had 1868/69 created as commissioned works, Schindler was until then only as a painter of realistic landscapes emerged. it is certainly the excitation by Arnold Bocklin famous "Isle of the Dead" ascribe that Schindler with "Pax" the Unmschwung takes to Symbolist landscape. In this scene, a monk is busy lighting a large candle in a fresh grave while above his head a halo with an easily detectable figure - probably the beneficent Christ - represents.
